Karey McGlinchey, Day 6

Malawi 4/26

Hebrews 2:1 says “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” As we were speaking to the pastors’ wives this morning this verse from my morning reading came back to my mind. In praying that these women will pay close attention to what we were sharing with them from God’s Word, I couldn’t help but wonder what I’ve not paid close enough attention to from His Word…

We had about 50 women again this morning (they slept on the compound last night) and we started early so they could get home before dark. We talked about the discipline of marriage, giving, perseverance and witness. We knew going in that marriage was going to be a real hot topic as they’d already asked many questions about different areas of marriage so we prepared as best we could, prayed a LOT and pretty much steeled ourselves for just about anything! They did have many questions—some general and some very specific. We did our best to answer each one with Scripture. They had us on our toes for sure, but God is good and will always answer an earnest question. The Spirit led us to the right scriptures and showed Himself faithful again. We finished early enough that we had extra time for questions and everyone was being shy so I asked who had been married the longest. One lovely lady has been married 72 years!!!! When we asked what helped keep their marriage going so long she boldly told the other women that 1) they love each other 2) they read the Bible together and 3) they go to bed together every night possible. It was such a blessing, especially with so many of the younger women struggling with their marriages. There were about 4 or 5 others who’d been married 40+ years. We were able to encourage the younger women to talk to these older saints and let them teach them. It was truly a moment appointed by God and I was humbled and excited to see it play out!

We gave Lita a night off and fixed dinner for a change. Ed made baked potatoes and grilled steaks, Allie made a yummy chocolate chip banana bread, Janine made a salad and Gabbie and I just did as we were told. It was a yummy dinner and, as always, good fellowship.

Tomorrow we do 3 Bible clubs in different villages. We will probably teach 2 lessons each time. I am looking forward to singing, teaching and playing with the children. So many come running and they pay such close attention for so long! It will be a very tiring day, I’m sure, but God gives strength as we need.
